can Christians have demons?

By Tailah Scroggins

This is one of the most common questions in deliverance ministry: Can a Christian have Demons? Can be possessed by a demon? The short answer is—a born-again believer cannot be possessed by a demon. However, a Christian can have demons that oppress, influence, and torment them.

Understanding the Difference: Possession vs. Demonization

The Greek word “daimonizomai” (δαιμονίζομαι) is often translated as “demon-possessed” in English Bibles, but a more accurate translation is “to be demonized”—meaning to be under the influence of a demon to some degree.

Possession implies full ownership or control, which is impossible for a Christian because they belong to Jesus (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Demonic Influence means a demon can attack a believer’s mind, emotions, body, or circumstances, especially if there is an open door through sin, trauma, the occult or generational curses.

Can Demons Enter a Christian?

While a Christian’s spirit is sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13), their soul (mind, emotions, will) and body can be affected by demonic activity. We see this in believers who struggle with:

  • Persistent sinful strongholds (lust, addiction, anger)
  • Chronic fear, anxiety, depression, self-harm, certain cases of mental illness or tormenting thoughts
  • Unexplainable sickness or pain without medical cause
  • Difficulty praying, reading the Bible, or worshiping
  • Sleep paralysis or disturbing nightmares
  • Voices or intrusive thoughts that attack their faith
  • Paranormal Activity

Biblical Examples of Believers Facing Demonic Influence

  1. Peter – Jesus rebuked Satanic thoughts influencing Peter when he opposed God’s plan (Matthew 16:23).
  2. Ananias and Sapphira – Satan “filled” their hearts to lie to the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:3).
  3. Paul’s Thorn in the Flesh – He described a “messenger of Satan” tormenting him (2 Corinthians 12:7).
  1. Judas — Judas was one of Jesus’ twelve disciples and spent years following Jesus and walking with him daily. Ultimately, he allowed Satan to fill his heart and betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver.

How to Overcome Demonic Influence

If you recognize signs of demonic oppression in your life, you don’t need to live in fear—deliverance is possible through Jesus!

  1. Repent and Close Open Doors – Confess any sin that may have allowed demonic access (1 John 1:9).
  2. Renounce the Enemy – Verbally break any agreements with the enemy and declare Jesus as Lord over every area of your life.
  3. Use Your Authority – Jesus gave believers power over demons (Luke 10:19). Command them to leave in His name.
  4. Fill Yourself with God’s Word and Spirit – Deliverance isn’t just about casting demons out; it’s about staying filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).
  5. Surround Yourself with Other Believers – A strong Christian community can help you walk in freedom (James 5:16).

A Christian cannot be owned by demons, but they can be influenced by them. The good news is that through Christ, every believer has authority and victory over the enemy. If you are struggling with spiritual attacks, don’t be discouraged—Jesus came to set the captives free (Luke 4:18), and He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4).
